Domain Overview: Former United States (FUS)
Once a superpower, the nation-states that make up the FUS struggle for unity.

OVERVIEW

The loose confederation of sovereign nations that in 2091 occupies the middle part of North America is known as the Former United States, a wistful reminder that its people were once the preeminent superpower of the world. Though militarily strong, the FUS was forced by the UN to give up most of its weapons of mass destruction in exchange for IMF loans that funded most of the reconstruction after the War of Secession. Although its military forces are loosely united under the ComForce Treaty of 2082, the FUS's political structure is fragmented among the regional powers. The FUS economic structure is heavily influenced by the Corporate Hierarchy, especially in the Eastern Sprawl and the Pacific Utopia.

HISTORY

By the early 21st century the United States was already in a major economic decline. Internal political struggles, an inability to further its agenda on the world stage, and economic competition from major multinational corporations all contributed to the weakened state of the world's last superpower. By the 2030's the US had left the UN and turned inward in an attempt to hold itself together.

In 2074 California, Oregon, and Washington, known collectively as the Pacific Utopia, seceded from the US. The United Nations supported the Pacific Utopia, and after a short, armed struggle the territory won its autonomy. Shortly thereafter, Texas annexed most of Northern Mexico, renamed itself the Republic of Texas, and it too seceded. The remaining United States, unwilling to go to war once again, convened an emergency Constitutional Congress to arbitrate the dispute. In the end, Congress oversaw the dismantling of the once great nation. By the early 2080's, what used to be the United States of America had been replaced by several smaller, independent nations known colloquially as the Former United States.

The FUS countries occasionally fight amongst themselves, but for the most they part coexist in a state of strained peace.
